Description
Imagine a world in which people are connected to their local woodlands and appreciate the important part timber plays in their lives. It's already happening in and around Bristol thanks to the Bristol, Bath and West cluster group.

We are an active and enthusiastic group working to bring people together with their local woodlands and all aspects of the timber cycle using an innovative range of educational projects. Our latest was early in May, a unique opportunity for teachers of years 5, 6, 7 and 8 to taste and plan practical history experiences for their classes. We'll be posting details of what happened - doesn't time fly! - but in the meantime, the invitation is still below.

Members currently include forest school leaders, play- and youth workers, teachers, green woodworkers, foresters and staff from local conservation organisations. We meet regularly to exchange information, learn who's doing what and co-operate on joint projects promoting the value of woodlands.

Want to find out more? Download our latest members' showcase or get in touch. New members are welcome and it costs nothing to join.

Forest Festival!
October 2008 years old
FEI Forest Festival!

Over 550 people took part in a hugely successful FEI Forest Festival event
held at Badock's Wood Local Nature Reserve, Bristol on Sunday 18th May. Activities and workshops at this free public event included guided walks, woodcraft and art workshops, tree dressing, storytelling, river dipping, owl encounters, barbeque, demonstrations,
information and much more! A key highlight of the event was an outdoor play
performance by pupils from Badock's Wood Primary School which is adjacent to the site. This event was the culmination of a year long FEI training project funded by the FEI partnership fund which has enabled local practitioners to develop their skills in a range of key forest education areas of work including earth education, bushcraft, outdoor play, tree folklore, forest school, greenwoodworking and risk assessment. The training project has been immensely successful in terms of acheiving our aims to raise the quality, profile and passion for forest education in this region and has fully exceded our expectations in terms of its wider impact. As a result of this project the cluster group grew significantly and was the springboard for our next partnership project - 'Hands on History'.

We helped to plan a practical history experience for your class
March 2009 Cross curriculum 9-11 years old
Outdoor Learning Open Day Saturday, May 9

A Practical Demonstration Day
for teachers of years 5, 6, 7 & 8

A chance to have tried your hand at making something relevant to the history curriculum as a taster experience for your own class.

Alternatively it was a chance to use them as ideas for humanities, PHSE or DT topics, whether making hurdles, shelters or fires, cooking, using a pole lathe, or other tools or even telling stories.

Teachers networked with other teachers, met outdoor learning practitioners, planned lessons and discovered how much of the hard work we can do to help you bring history to life.

Download the flyer for full details of what was on offer. And if you're interested in attending another one, please let us know. We may organise a similar event in the new year.
