New FEI funded project to develop forest school in the region
June 2010 Cross curriculum All ages
Our cluster was recently successful in obtaining a 2nd round of FEI funding to assist groups in sustainably managing their sites for forest school. The project includes 2 training days on site management and green woodwork, which were held on the 19th March 2010 at Sandfield Natural Play centre and the 3rd June 2010 at Penwortham Education centre. The cluster group was also able to offer free site advice sessions to 10 sites, and funding for 3 sites to become flagship sites for forest school. The 3 successful flagship sites are: Bowerham primary in Lancaster, Smithills country park in Bolton and the Merseyside site is yet to be decided.

The 'New FEI funded project to develop forest school in the region' project was created by the North West FEI cluster cluster group.

April 2010 Cross curriculum All ages
Heather Brown from Heartwood Education has devised the Teens, Tots and Toys from the Wood programme. The project has been received with much enthusiasm from the schools, educational groups and FE colleges we have approached. So far, we have worked with one secondary school, one home education group and on FE college. All the students that have worked on the project so far have been between the ages of 13 and 19.
The students have had a presentation about the project, visited a local woodland or wooded area to select and cut their timber.
Planted native trees within the wood or wooded area.

They have had sessions outlining the importance of FSC sourced timber, done self directed research on FSC toys and products that are currently available and played FSC games from the FSC education pack.

They students have had green woodworking tuition by a local craftsman.

We are currently making a video of the Teens and Tots project that we hope we will be able to include in the resource pack. We are trying to find some more funds to get a professional person in to make and produce this video.

The students have completed pre and post course questionnaires. Currently approximately 30 students have taken part in the project.. Our next step is to deliver to a group 30 of Year 8 and 9 pupils these dates are booked for the 25th and the 28th of May.

Please find attached some photos of the project so far.
Here are some comments from some FE students:
"I didn't believe I could make something like this in two days. I am really pleased with myself."
"I have enjoyed something I thought I would hate!"
and Y9
" It is best to make simple wooden toys from little kids cos they use their imagination a lot"
"Can we do this every week!"

Undercover
August 2009 Cross curriculum 5-11 years old
UndercoverMatch funded by the islands Health Alliance this pilot project took place in two schools to provide basic and natural shade where children congregated to learn and play. Children were able to observe the effect of the changing seasons on their structure which will continue to be a useful and fun resource for years to come. Those involved gained ownership by designing the structures and partaking in the planning and maintenance. The image of their local environment and wildlife was enhanced helping them to gain respect for their local surroundings reduce issues such as antisocial behaviour and gorse fires. The project funded a co-ordinator to plan, construct and maintain the structures whilst training school staff, pupils and members of the community to take ownership and ensure sustainability. Local gardening groups assisted to create an intergenerational interaction between children and older members in the community.

The project will be made available to other schools on Ynys Môn/Anglesey through the provision of a resource pack (available on the FEI website), locally available willow and local knowledge gained during the pilot.

Outdoor Learning Open Day Saturday, May 9

A Practical Demonstration Day
for teachers of years 5, 6, 7 & 8

A chance to have tried your hand at making something relevant to the history curriculum as a taster experience for your own class.

Alternatively it was a chance to use them as ideas for humanities, PHSE or DT topics, whether making hurdles, shelters or fires, cooking, using a pole lathe, or other tools or even telling stories.

Teachers networked with other teachers, met outdoor learning practitioners, planned lessons and discovered how much of the hard work we can do to help you bring history to life.

December 2008 9-11 years old
In the summer of 2007, the Yeovil and Dorset Forest Education Cluster Group received funding from the FEI Partnership Fund to run a pilot project to develop a KS2 History resource for the FEI web site. This pilot project initially included three primary schools and a home education group but later included a secondary school.

Schools studying the Vikings as part of 'Invaders and Settlers’ were selected. The main aim of the project was to encourage more outdoor learning, in this case for history, especially in woods. 99% of children said that their outdoor sessions had made them enjoy history more. 82% said they were more interested in the history of woods and 74% were more confident about identifying 'older’ trees, after participating.

Woodlands have played a significant part in the history of our changing landscape. During the Neolithic period trees were cleared in order to make room for proliferating organized settlements and for the growth of agriculture and the trend continued. However timber remained a valuable resource and the Vikings were skilled in using it for construction and household items. This was one of the reasons for focusing on this period for an FEI project.

Schools were provided with simple to use plans so that they could run their own activities, preferably in a local wood. The plans, though primarily history based, are flexible and are intended for cross curriculum outdoor learning in woods or any other suitable outdoor space for Key Stage 2 pupils. The 'Viking Day’ format can be adapted for KS1 and KS3 and also adapted for other historical periods. We held a successful 'Celtic Day’ using the same format but modified.

It is hoped that the activities will help raise the profile of woods and trees amongst children. They can be interwoven with other tasks and topics for variety. Staff training or assistance from a trained leader is advised for some activities. Risk assessments and external visits requests should be completed in line with your own policies and procedures.

Forest Festival!
October 2008 years old
FEI Forest Festival!

Over 550 people took part in a hugely successful FEI Forest Festival event
held at Badock's Wood Local Nature Reserve, Bristol on Sunday 18th May. Activities and workshops at this free public event included guided walks, woodcraft and art workshops, tree dressing, storytelling, river dipping, owl encounters, barbeque, demonstrations,
information and much more! A key highlight of the event was an outdoor play
performance by pupils from Badock's Wood Primary School which is adjacent to the site. This event was the culmination of a year long FEI training project funded by the FEI partnership fund which has enabled local practitioners to develop their skills in a range of key forest education areas of work including earth education, bushcraft, outdoor play, tree folklore, forest school, greenwoodworking and risk assessment. The training project has been immensely successful in terms of acheiving our aims to raise the quality, profile and passion for forest education in this region and has fully exceded our expectations in terms of its wider impact. As a result of this project the cluster group grew significantly and was the springboard for our next partnership project - 'Hands on History'.

FEI Forest Life Launch Event
March 2006 years old
In September 2005, 60 local schoolchildren gathered at David Marshall Lodge for the first Forest Life Event at the launch of the FEI Stirlingshire Cluster Group. The children had all be involved in the RSPB/Forestry Commission's Live Ospreywatch at David Marshall Lodge.
The event was aimed to integrate local schoolchildren with one another, an important issue for some headteachers whose children are often taught in schools in very remote areas. The event also aimed to raise their awareness of the forest environment and to encourage them to use it more responsibly. Members of the cluster group including local headteachers, Forestry Commission, RSPB, Dounan's Scottish Outdoor Centre, the Loch Lomond National Park Rangers Service as well as a Central Scotland Wildlife Crime Officer worked together and achieved a rotation of interactive educational games and activities for the children throughout the day. The day was a big success for the members of the group, and most of all for the children. We hope to make this an annual event.

Wood Sculptures in Abergavenny
April 2005 Cross curriculum All ages
Wood Sculptures in AbergavennyA mature blue cedar tree killed by honey fungus needed to be felled so the timber was put to good use in producing fantastic sculptures in Abergavenny.

Pupils from Park Street Infant School and adults from a nearby day centre worked with Monmouthshire Countryside Service and a local wood sculptor on the project. The children contributed their ideas for carvings representing Abergavenny's history to be incorporated into the sculptures, the first of which was sited in the community gardens.

The school children also produced designs for a school bench to be sculpted from the same tree and placed in their grounds. First they drew their designs on paper then made them from modelling clay and florist's foam.

Later, the remaining timber was used to produce two more sculptures both now placed in day centres in Abergavenny.
